BlueStacks has released the alpha version of its App Player today, moving a step further in their quest for the integration of Android apps on Windows devices. It’s a free software that enables users to run Android apps on Windows PCs, tablets, netbooks and laptops, absolutely unmodified.

The early test version comes pre-loaded with 10 apps, with the ability to add up to 26 more. The player also allows you to wirelessly sync apps from an Android phone to your PC with BlueStacks’ free Cloud Connect app. Users install Cloud Connect on their Android device, and pick the apps that they want their PC to have.

But games such as Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja are prohibited. Those, as it turns out, are reserved for a premium version of the App Player which BlueStacks hopes to launch at a later date. The paid variant of the app will feature unlimited app installation along with access to games.

There is a “get apps” section in the alpha build of the app that currently lets users choose from 150 approved apps and send them to their desktop. So it’s basically an Android app store where the target device is a Windows PC, which is simply unprecedented.

For now the App Player supports only Windows PCs. The company is working on a Mac version but concedes that it may be a while before one is available.
